The exposure of alleged match fixing in the K-League on Wednesday is likely to escalate into the worst scandal in the league’s 28-year-old history.

The prosecutors arrested two brokers and are investigating 10 players as of Thursday, including Sangju Sangmu Phoneix striker and former national team member Kim Dong-hyun, on charges of colluding for illegal gains through sports betting by rigging the game results. A rumor is prevalent that there are more players who have taken bribes. “They seem to exist in almost every club,” according to a league official who asked not to be named.

The football officials are worried that the K-League will face an unprecedented crisis in the aftermath of these revelations.

Representatives from the K-League clubs hurriedly convened a meeting on Thursday afternoon to discuss how to cope with the matter.

“The alleged match fixing could damage the league’s reputation by triggering serious distrust among the fans,” Kim Won-dong, Gangwon FC CEO, said.

“If a player makes a mistake in the penalty area, his teammates could wonder whether he is involved in rigging the game results.

“This will lead to emotional instability among the athletes, and affect the game,” he added.

The Changwon District Prosecutors Office, which initiated an investigation into Kim’s case, expanded its probe into Incheon United’s deceased goalkeeper Yoon Ki-won whose suicide on May 6 is rumored to be related to the scandal.

It has yet to be confirmed whether the brokers and the players placed bets with Sports Toto that runs a lottery and sports betting business, or collaborated with illegal bookmakers. There had been speculation that many K-League officials were aware of the unlawful betting and match fixing since last season, and it was “just a matter of time before the scam came to light.”

According to the investigators, the brokers usually approached the athletes who earn an annual salary of less than 500 million won, offering them benefits in return for helping fix the games. Kim is currently doing his military duty with Sangmu, a military team comprised of amateur and professional athletes serving in the Armed Forces. Yoon made his professional debut for Incheon in 2010, making one appearance last year, but played for the club seven times this season.

Players from smaller clubs may have been more susceptible to such offers, as they could receive more than their yearly pay by collaborating two or three times a season.

Many of the involved footballers consist of goalkeepers and defenders who could conspire to concede goals. The forwards also became targets as they could deliberately miss scoring opportunities to lose the game.

While the gamblers with close relationships with local criminal gangs brought illegal benefits to the players, they constantly blackmailed the athletes to remain in the scheme and used violence when the players failed to follow the plan.

“I heard Kim was beaten up when he failed to follow the plan suggested by the brokers,” a K-League official said.

Yoon’s death is also seen as suspicious as his career was on the rise and he apparently had no particular reason to kill himself.

프로축구 승부조작 수사 확대…2개 구단 10여명

K리그 현역 선수 2명에 대해 승부조작 혐의로 구속영장이 청구된 가운데 검찰 수사 선상에 오른 선수가 2개 구단에서 10여명에 달하는 것으로 확인됐다.

프로축구 승부조작 사건을 수사하는 창원지검은 연루된 선수들이 불법 사설복권이 아닌 법적으로 허용된 '스포츠토토' 승부조작을 위해 브로커로부터 거액을 받고 매수된 혐의가 있다고 26일 밝혔다.

불법 스포츠복권 사이트는 수백여개가 있지만 국내에서 법적으로 허가된 업체는 국민체육진흥공단이 발행하는 체육진흥투표권 수탁 사업자인 '스포츠토토' 한 곳뿐이다.

검찰은 이번 사건을 합법적인 스포츠토토에서 브로커들이 거액의 환급금을 노려 선수들을 매수해 승부조작을 한 사건으로 규정했다.

스포츠토토는 축구 경기결과를 적중시킨 사람에게 환급금을 주는 표권으로 1인당 한번에 10만원까지 구입할 수 있다.

검찰은 지난 3월부터 열리고 있는 '러시앤캐시컵 2011' 대회기간 브로커와 선수들이 승부조작을 위해 돈을 주고받았다는 첩보를 입수해 최근 수사에 착수했다.

수사 초기단계에서 검찰은 승부조작 대가로 지난 4월 모 구단 골키퍼와 다른 구단의 미드필더에게 1억원과 1억2천만원씩을 건넨 브로커 2명을 구속한데 이어 돈을 받은 선수 2명에 대해서도 구속영장을 청구했다.

이 과정에서 관련자들의 진술뿐만 아니라 돈을 주고받은 증거들도 일부 확보했다.

전 국가대표 출신 김동현(27.상무) 선수도 '러시앤캐시컵 2011'대회 승부조작에 관여한 혐의를 포착해 소환조사했다.

검찰은 김 선수가 소속팀인 상무와는 관련없다고 밝혀 브로커 2명과 영장이 청구된 선수 2명과의 인맥으로 인해 연결고리 역할을 한 혐의를 받고 있는 것으로 추정되고 있다.

검찰은 다음 단계로 두 선수가 같은 구단 소속 동료 선수들에게도 승부조작을 부탁하며 돈을 분배했는 지에 대해 중점적으로 수사하고 있다.

검찰 관계자는 "지금까지 브로커 2명과 현직 프로축구 선수 3명 등 모두 5명을 상대로 수사를 진행했다"며 "돈이 나눠진 정황이 있어 수사를 받게 될 프로축구 선수들이 더 늘어날 가능성이 크다"고 말했다.

이어 "몇개 구단, 선수 몇명이 수사대상이라고 못박지 않고 혐의가 나오는대로 수사대상이 된다"고 덧붙였다.

이 관계자는 또 "이달초 숨진 인천유나이티드 골키퍼 윤기원의 자살동기가 승부조작과 관련된 세력의 협박 때문이라는 소문도 있지만 이번 사건과는 별개로 현재로서는 수사를 하고 있지 않다"고 밝혔다.

검찰은 수사가 확대됨에 따라 특수부 담당검사를 1명에서 2명으로 늘렸다.
